Sure bets in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas has become one of the “it” places where many Canadians find their dollar going a lot further these days. For those who don’t have much vacation time left for the year but who are hoping to pay a quick visit to Sin City this fall, here is a quick 3-2-1 guide for you.
Situated in the heart of the Nevada desert, spring and autumn are probably the most ideal seasons for a Sin City getaway. Here are some recommendations on what to see, where to eat and where to stay.
THREE MUST-SEE SHOWS:
1. Céline Dion’s ‘A New Day…’
Charlemagne, Quebec may be the place where she was born, but it is Las Vegas that has launched her to super stardom. After a record-setting five-year run, the Canadian songstress is about to say good-bye to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace as she gets ready for her world tour. Her outrageously successful spectacle on the Vegas Strip will come to an end on December 15, but limited seats may still be available. It’s a must-see show for her fans, and it may even convert a few of you non-Céline believers.
2. ‘O’ by Cirque du Soleil
Sin City is always on a roll with big productions, and Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil has been the one who dominates the show biz in Vegas. “O,” an aquatic New-Age circus at Bellagio, is not to be missed. But if getting a ticket is an issue, “Le Rève” at Wynn Las Vegas is also quite breath-taking. With a circular pool stage in the middle, there’s no such thing as a bad seat.
3. ‘Ka’ by Cirque du Soleil
“Ka” is one of the most expensive and technologically-advanced Cirque shows to date. Using complex automation, pyrotechnics, puppetry and multimedia projections, the production boasts a state-of-the-art, super high-tech set. The unprecedented acrobatic show uses a stage that can turn 360 degrees in any direction as well as invert vertically. “Ka,” based at the MGM Grand, is a definite prime choice for sci-fi fans and tech geeks. And for those who have real cravings for sci-fi, Hilton’s got a perfect attraction for you. Star Trek: The Experience, based on the Star Trek TV series and movies, is still going strong since it launched in 1997.
TWO SURE-BET RESTAURANTS:
1. Tao Las Vegas
Located inside The Venetian, the upscale trendy bistro offers a great mix of Asian fusion food. From its mouth-watering miso-glazed Chilean sea bass to crunchy spicy yellowtail sushi roll, Tao blends Chinese, Japanese and other southeastern Asian culinary art better than anyone else on the Strip. With a 20-foot tall Buddha towering over the main dining area, the ambiance inside is tastefully created, making it a favorite hangout for celebs and their fans.
2. Corsa Cucina & Bar
The restaurant, located at Wynn Las Vegas, offers some of the finest Italian and Mediterranean cuisines in town. The sophisticated but non-threatening décor makes this place one of the top destinations for great culinary experiences.
THE PLACE TO STAY:
1. The Signature at MGM Grand
Like many things in Vegas, a calm and chaos-free hotel stay is normally unheard of. But at this new MGM property, you can find a Zen-infused, casino-free environment. The Signature’s three, gleaming 40-story towers offer an almost cottage-like relaxing atmosphere and may be the No.1 choice for those who crave space and peace after heavy entertainment. For those who prefer the opposite, you may want to try the non-stop party going on in THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay.
